2021 – NOI.PH – Philippine Programming Contest

From August 28 to December 26, 2021, we held the first-ever Abakoda, which is a series of contests designed to introduce the basics of informatics Olympiad-style competitions to Filipino students. On the Saturdays between August 28 and December 11, we held short contests on Codeforces followed by live discussion streams on YouTube and on Facebook. Then, from December 17 to 26, we held a long contest in the same format as the NOI.PH Elimination Round.

Are you new to programming and find it enjoyable? Do you like solving puzzles? Perhaps you’re a Filipino high school student, and you’ve heard of the National Olympiad in Informatics, Philippines, and want to prepare for it, but don’t know where to start.

Then, join Abakoda 2021!

What is Abakoda?

Abakoda 2021 is a series of online programming contests targeted to those who know a little bit of programming, but who have little to no experience in programming contests.

Is it only for high school students?

No. Anyone interested in programming can join.

What if I’ve never joined a programming contest before?

We have a tutorial! We have released a tutorial video to make sure you know how to play the game.

Am I forced to use a specific programming language?

No, you can use any programming language that Codeforces supports. The list is here and it includes C, C++, Java, Python, Ruby, Javascript, among others. This means you can use any of the languages to code your solutions in.

How much does it cost to join?

It’s free, Bruce Lee! Participation in these contests is FREE and open to anyone interested in computer science and programming.

I missed the first few contests. Can I still join?

Yes. You can even join the previous contests. Of course, the rankings will not be official but at least you can expose yourself to the problems later.

When will the contests be held?

Every Saturday from August 28, 2021, to December 11, 2021, from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M., there will be short contest rounds on Codeforces.

Will I be disqualified if I miss some contests?

No, you will not be disqualified if you miss some contests. The contests can be accessed after the scheduled time but you can still “participate” in it after the fact. However, you will miss out on a couple of things.

If you miss the contests, you will be unable to (1) ask questions during the contest (2) ask questions during the livestream discussion (3) be recognized on the Facebook page based on how well you did. But that doesn’t disqualify you from joining future contests.

We get that sometimes life gets in the way and you need to sit out a few contests. You can still ask questions after the contest and view the livestream after it airs.

Where will it be held?

Everywhere, camembert! You can join these contests from anywhere — all you need is a computer and internet connection.

Is it just a series of contests?

No way, Jose! During the contests, high school students may ask for help in our Discord servers for the first out of the four problems. See below for more details.

Will there be a discussion of the solutions?

Yes! After each contest round, there will be a livestream discussion of the problem solutions. This lets you learn from this weeks’ contest and be better-equipped for next weeks’ contest.

During the livestream discussion, the teacher will be using Python to demonstrate the solutions. This does not mean you cannot use any other programming language if you have prefer something different.

Where will I be able to find the livestream discussion?

The live streams will be publicly viewable on the official NOI.PH YouTube channel and on the official NOI.PH Facebook page. Don’t forget to Like the Facebook Page and Subscribe to the YouTube channel so that you will be notified when it is live.

When will the discussion livestream be?

The livestream starts immediately after the contest, which will be around Saturdays at 4PM.

Is there a final contest without handholding so that I can see how much I progressed after joining the friendly contest every Saturday?

Wow, that’s a very specific question! From December 17, 2021, 6:00 P.M. to December 26, 2021, 11:59 P.M., there will be one long contest. For this long contest, you do not need to stay online and in the contest for the entire duration — just drop by and submit code any time during the contest window. This contest has exactly the same format as the NOI.PH Elimination Round, but easier.

Will I be disqualified from this final contest if I missed some weeks?

No.

Are there prizes for this final contest?

There will be prizes* for the long contest:

1st and 2nd places: 1 limited edition Japanese Olympiad in Informatics stapler

3rd place: 1 limited edition International Olympiad in Informatics 2018 notebook

4th and 5th places: 1 limited edition AtCoder decal

More prizes may be revealed later!

* Note: Only high school students are eligible to win prizes. Past NOI.PH medalists and Rookie-of-the-Year awardees are ineligible to win prizes.

Go to https://codeforces.com/group/Sw3sdIlMPV/contests.
Scroll down a bit to find the “Member management” panel on the right side of the page. Then, click on the “Join” button.
Contest rounds will keep appearing on this page as the series goes on. Simply click on the “Register” link below the name of a specific round to register for it, and “Enter” to go into its contest page.

Exclusive Bonus for Filipino students!

If you are a Filipino high school student, you can join the NOI.PH Discord server by emailing [email protected] with your name, grade level, and school. There, you can ask for help when you don’t understand something, or you can also just make friends with high school students all over the country, who just like you are learning and practicing programming.

2021 IOI Team

We are happy to present the Philippine team to this year’s International Olympiad in Informatics, hosted by Singapore and held online. They will represent the country in the world’s most prestigious computing competition for high school students.

Raphael Dylan Dalida

Grade 10, Philippine Science High School Main Campus

Dylan has been interested in competitive programming since eighth grade. After getting a bronze medal in the Singapore NOI, his drive for competitive programming skyrocketed, and he has joined the NOI every year since. Programming enabled him to be more focused and to relieve stress during the pandemic. He enjoys math as well; in particular, he won a bronze medal in the 61st International Mathematical Olympiad. He also enjoys playing the piano.

Vincent Dela Cruz

Grade 12, Valenzuela City School of Mathematics and Science

Vincent’s journey in programming started in Grade 4; he enjoys writing simple games and mini-programs in Python and JavaScript. Ever since then, his goal is to become better at programming and develop real applications of his own. For three years in a row, he has been competing in the International Mathematical Olympiad. Aside from programming, he also enjoys playing puzzle video games, such as OneShot.

Steven Reyes

Grade 12, Saint Jude Catholic School

Steven first discovered programming around 6 years ago when he created circuits and logic gates in Minecraft. Creating these contraptions are like solving computational problems, both of which he enjoys indulging in. The joy he finds in problem-solving extends to the different math, science, and programming competitions he participates in, and even to teaching fellow schoolmates how to approach various kinds of puzzles.

Frederick Ivan Tan

Grade 11, Philippine Science High School Main Campus

Ivan was always someone who was interested in programming. His father taught him basic programming during grade 5 and Ivan fell in love with it. From the first script he created on his iPad mini to his studying of different algorithms and data structures, he knew that computer science would be his future. In his free time, Ivan also loves to play frisbee and video games with his friends.

2021 National Finals

The NOI.PH 2021 National Finals were held virtually on 8-9 May 2021. Of the 30 top scorers of the National Eliminations, 24 competed over two five-hour rounds, each of which consisted of four problems.

Events

The first day of the contest started with an opening ceremony livestream. After the national anthem, Chief of the Science and Technology Manpower Education Research and Promotions Division of the DOST-SEI, Dr. Ruby Cristobal, gave some opening remarks. She stressed the important role that the field of informatics plays in the modern world, highlighted how NOI.PH and its contestants are a testament to our ability to deal with uncertainty, and ended optimistically by noting how the pandemic brought opportunities to those working in IT.

After the inspiring message, NOI.PH President Marte Soliza delivered his own remarks. Then, contest co-director Vernon Gutierrez discussed the rules to the competition before the Practice Round of the competition. In the Practice Round, students spent 90 minutes familiarizing themselves with the contest system through solving some problems.

After a one-hour break, the first round of the finals began, and after the first round, there were some reminders for the second day of the program.

Round 2 began in the morning of the second day. After the competition, NOI.PH Head of Scientific Committee Kevin Atienza went over some of the main ideas of the problems in a livestream.

Finally, the awarding livestream happened. Marte and Vernon presented the certificates, awarded the best rookies of the year, and finally, awarded the medals to the top six contestants. The top six contestants were also interviewed about their training and contest experience.

Awards

The Rookie of the Year awards are given to the highest-scoring first-time finalists. Runner-ups Shawn Darren Chua and Daryll Carlsten Ko each won a mouse, and Rookie of the Year Filbert Ephraim Wu won a keyboard.

Honorable mentions, in decreasing order of rank, were Shawn Darren Chua, Kian Colin Chua, John Angelo Oringo, and Daryll Carlsten Ko. They each won Php 1500. Bronze medalists, in decreasing order of rank, were Filbert Ephraim Wu, Enrico Rolando Martinez, and Steven Reyes. They each won Php 2000.

The third and second places, Frederick Ivan Michael Tan, and Raphael Dylan Dalida, each won a silver medal and Php 3000.

Vincent Dela Cruz, the top ranked contestant, won a gold medal and Php 6000.

2021 National Eliminations

The NOI.PH 2021 National Eliminations started on 6:00 PM of 5 February 2021 and finished on 11:59 PM of 14 February 2021. It consisted of fourteen problems of varying difficulty. The round was held online, on Codeforces.

The Participants

Among the 187 registrants, 128 participated in the 222-hour online competition. The participants came from 40 different schools from all over the country. Moreover, each of the main island groups of the Philippines were represented.
