From November 11, 2023, to January 3, 2024, we held the 3rd Abakoda, which is a series of contests designed to introduce the basics of informatics Olympiad-style competitions to Filipino students. On the Saturdays between November 11 and December 16, we held short contests on Codeforces. Then, from December 23 to January 3, we held a long contest in the same format as the NOI.PH Elimination Round.

Are you new to programming and find it enjoyable? Do you like solving puzzles? Perhaps you’re a Filipino high school student, and you’ve heard of the National Olympiad in Informatics, Philippines, and want to prepare for it, but don’t know where to start.

Then, join Abakoda 2023!

What is Abakoda?

Abakoda 2023 is a series of online programming contests targeted at those who have little to no experience in programming.

Is it only for high school students?

No. Anyone interested in programming can join. However, only high school students can join our Discord server where they can discuss problems and ask questions with others and with NOI.PH trainers. Scroll down to the bottom of the page for details.

What if I’ve never joined a programming contest before?

We have a tutorial! We have released a tutorial video to make sure you know how to play the game.

I’m not good at programming or do not know any programming at all. Can I still join?

Yes. We are all here to learn and improve our skills. At the beginning of the series, there will be a “warm-up” contest with no time pressure. This comes with tutorials which you can access here. The tutorials are meant to be understandable even to those who do not know how to program at all. And the warm-up contest is meant to be doable even for those who have just started learning to program when Abakoda 2023 starts.

Am I forced to use a specific programming language?

No, you can use any programming language that Codeforces supports. The list is here and it includes C, C++, Java, Python, Ruby, and Javascript, among others. However, solution discussions usually show sample code in Python. If you program in a different language, it still shouldn’t be too hard to follow the main ideas of the solutions though. If you do not know how to program yet, the introductory tutorials are in Python so we recommend learning that.

How much does it cost to join?

It’s free, Bruce Lee! Participation in these contests is FREE and open to anyone interested in computer science and programming.

When will the contests be held?

The tutorials’ problem sets are up indefinitely, so there’s no time pressure! Learn at your own pace and consult them throughout Abakoda as it progresses (you can even refer to them during the contests, if you need to!)

Then, every Saturday from November 11, 2023, to December 16, 2023, from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M., there will be short contest rounds. You are encouraged to stay online through each two-hour round, but you are always free to come back and “virtually participate” at any later time.

Finally, from December 23, 2023, 6:00 P.M. to January 1, 2024, 8:00 P.M., there will be another long contest. Again, for this long contest, you do not need to stay online and in the contest for the entire duration — just drop by and submit code any time during the contest window. This contest has precisely the same format as the NOI.PH Elimination Round, but easier.

I missed the first few contests. Can I still join?

Yes. You can even join the previous contests. Of course, you will no longer be in the official rankings of the contests you missed but at least you can expose yourself to past problems.

Will I be disqualified if I miss some contests?

No, you will not be disqualified if you miss some contests. The contests can be accessed after the scheduled time and you can still “participate” in them after the fact. However, you will miss out on a couple of things.

If you miss the contests, you will be unable to (1) ask questions during the contest (2) join the discussion on Discord right after each round, when it is expected that most people will be actively discussing the round. But that doesn’t disqualify you from joining future contests.

We get that sometimes life gets in the way and you need to sit out a few contests. You can still ask questions after the contest and read the solution explanations.

Is it just a series of contests?

No way, Jose!

Will there be a discussion of the solutions?

Yes! After each contest round, trainers will be available on the Discord server to answer questions and discuss solutions. We will also be releasing written tutorials for every round. The Discord server is exclusive for Filipino high school students, but the written tutorials will be made available to anyone.

High school students may even ask for help on the Discord server for the first out of the four problems even while the contest round is still running.

We’ll leave a link here for where you can find them, as soon as the first contest is done!

Are there prizes?

There will be prizes for the long contest! They will be announced closer to the starting date of the long contest.

Note: Only high school students are eligible to win prizes. Past Abakoda prize winners, NOI.PH medalists, and NOI.PH Rookie-of-the-Year awardees are ineligible to win prizes.

There will be no prizes for the warm-up contest and the short contests. They’re purely for educational value!

Contest rounds will keep appearing on this page as the series goes on. Simply click on the “Register” link below the name of a specific round to register for it, and “Enter” to go into its contest page.

Solutions

First, almost all TAMa problems involve modulo because of the size of the numbers involved. You can refer to a quick crash course in modular arithmetic here.

Second, the solution sketches detail solutions for all four subtasks in order to 1) let the necessary ideas build on one another naturally, and 2) emphasize that despite later subtasks being possibly quite difficult, it should still be possible to earn points in earlier subtasks using basic mathematics and programming.

We don’t expect you to implement four programs, one for each subtask. Usually, the most efficient program which solves the final subtask can also just be used to solve the other subtasks as well.

Calling all math nerds! TAMa na!

Are you a bright-eyed JHS student at the start of your math journey? Or a hardcore math veteran in SHS looking for a challenge? NOI.PH invites all math enthusiasts to flex their math muscles in TAMa 2023!

What is TAMa?

TAMa—which stands for Tool-Assisted Mathematics—is an online math competition with a twist: You’re going to need the full might of a computer in order to answer these problems!

“Although mathematics will help you arrive at elegant and efficient methods, the use of a computer and programming skills will be required to solve most problems,” to quote this contest’s inspiration, the website Project Euler.

What kind of math should I expect?

TAMa focuses mostly on topics that appear in math olympiads, with a particular emphasis on combinatorics and number theory. TAMa puts a great focus on exploratory problem solving—we hope for this to be an educational experience where people feel encouraged to investigate and research brand new topics.

Even still, the contest is designed so that everyone will have something that they can do, regardless of where they are in their math or programming journey. As long as you’re interested, everyone is invited!

You can check out some practice problems for a concrete idea of what kinds of tasks to expect from TAMa.

I like math, but I don’t know any programming!

Not to worry! NOI.PH has an entire crash-course introduction to Python available here, which contains all the information you need to get started with programming! TAMa is all about interesting math puzzles combined with foundational skills in programming and computer science, so these tutorials will bring you up to speed on what you need to know in order to participate.

Also, the contest is long format and open-reference, so you don’t need to stress about needing to memorize the syntax!

Do I need to use Python?

Nope! In TAMa, the only objective is to arrive at the final answer by any means necessary, so you can use any programming language you like. You can even try solving using pen and paper, if you want!

When is TAMa 2023?

TAMa 2023 will run online from October 20, 2023, 6:00 PM until October 29, 2023, 11:59 PM.

The long contest format means you’ll have ample time to solve and research at your own leisure over the course of these ~10 days.

How much does it cost to join?

It’s free, Bruce Lee! Participation in these contests is FREE and open to anyone interested in mathematics, computer science, and programming.

Are there prizes?

Yes! The top 3 Filipino high school students will receive limited-edition NOI.PH mousepads as a prize.

Furthermore, anyone who reaches certain point thresholds in the contest can request an official e-certificate from NOI.PH to commemorate their achievement. There will be 10 problems that are worth 200 points each (but with partial points available). The thresholds for certificates are:

Certificate of Competence – 400 points
Certificate of Proficiency – 800 points
Certificate of Excellence – 1200 points
Certificate of Mastery – 1600 points
Certificate of ??? – 2000 points (name will only be revealed if someone achieves 2000 points)

Qualifying for any certificate is a worthy achievement, and we would like you to be able to be officially recognized!

Note that these prizes are only redeemable by Filipino high school students. Everyone else is still free to join the contest itself, for the learning experience!

At a later date, closer to the start of the competition, an email will be sent to the email address you registered with. It will contain the details of how to access and log in to our contest management system.
A reminder will be posted in our NOI.PH Discord server (linked below) when this email is sent out. Join in if you don’t want to miss out on that, or any other announcements!

I need to practice!

First, for TAMa specifically, you can check out our practice problems (also linked above). Until the contest starts, https://cms.noi.ph leads to the TAMa Practice Round where you can test your answers using the contest interface.

You can check out Project Euler for more mathematical programming problems in TAMa’s format—in fact, Project Euler served as the inspiration for this contest!

Although it may not have the same format as Project Euler and TAMa, you can also check out websites like Codeforces and AtCoder for problems in competitive programming. Although not all problems are as explicitly about math, the field of competitive programming still contains tons of problems in the same vein, in terms of needing smart insights in order to be solved.

In particular, we recommend you try out the Abakoda 2021 and Abakoda 2022 long contests. Abakoda is an initiative by NOI.PH to gently introduce high school students to competitive programming, so it’s perfect for beginners. But be warned—just because it’s for beginners doesn’t mean it’ll all be easy!

Is there a competitive programming community for Filipino HS students?

If you are a Filipino high school student, you can join the NOI.PH Discord server by registering here with your name, grade level, and school. You can ask for help when you don’t understand something, or you can also just make friends with high school students all over the country, who just like you are learning and practicing programming.

We are happy to present the Philippine team to this year’s International Olympiad in Informatics hosted by Szeged, Hungary. They will represent the country in the world’s most prestigious computing competition for high school students.

John Lloyd Allas

Grade 12, City of San Jose Del Monte National Science High School

JL discovered competitive programming through a YouTube video during the pandemic. Since then, he has been participating in NOI.PH every year. Aside from solving competitive programming problems, he can also solve the Rubik’s Cube, even while blindfolded. He plans on studying computer science in college and pursuing a career as a software developer.

Cassidy Kyler Tan

Grade 12, Ateneo de Manila Senior High School

Cassidy was first exposed to programming in Grade 6, where he taught himself C++ after learning HTML in school. He first joined NOI.PH in Grade 9 after he heard about it in his Python class. He has since come to enjoy competitive programming and aims to use his experience to drive his future projects. In his life outside informatics, he goes on adventures with his friends during their D&D sessions.

Jerome Austin Te

Grade 9, Jubilee Christian Academy

Jerome first learned programming in AMSLI’S Informatics Enrichment Program (AIEP), starting with Scratch, transitioning to Python, and then self-learning C++. His curiosity drew him to join Abakoda and, soon after, the NOI.PH. His interest in problem-solving led him to competitive programming aside from olympiad math. In his spare time, he enjoys solving unique puzzles.

Filbert Ephraim Wu

Grade 11, Victory Christian International School

Ephraim first discovered computer programming from his brother in 2017, when his kuya showed him a program that “did some magic with arrays.” He is also an active competitor in math competitions, garnering a silver medal in the 2023 IMO held in Chiba, Japan. Ephraim likes speed in both programming and cubing, having once solved a 3×3 Rubik’s cube in under eight seconds. On top of all these, he also enjoys cityscape photography and has taken pictures of the Manila skyline daily for four years.

2023 National Finals

The NOI.PH 2023 National Final Round was held at the Ateneo de Manila University on 15-16 April 2023. The 30 top scorers of the 2023 National Eliminations competed over two five-hour rounds, each of which consisted of five problems.

Events

The first day of the contest started with an opening ceremony. After the national anthem, contest director Vernon Gutierrez gave some opening remarks. Then, chief judge Cisco Ortega discussed the rules of the competition before the Practice Round.

In the Practice Round, students spent 90 minutes familiarizing themselves with the contest system by solving some problems.

After a one-hour break, the first round of the finals began, and after the first round, there were some reminders for the second day of the program.

Round 2 began on the morning of the second day. After the competition, Cisco Ortega and Kevin Atienza of the NOI.PH Scientific Committee discussed the main ideas of the problems with the contestants.

Finally, the awarding and closing ceremony happened. Dr. Randolf Sasota, Officer-in-Charge of the S&T Manpower Education Research and Promotions Division of DOST-SEI, gave some closing remarks. Then, Vernon, Cisco, and Marte Soliza, the current president of NOI.PH, presented the certificates, awarded the best rookies of the year, and finally, awarded the medals to the top ten contestants. This year’s champion, Raphael Dylan Dalida, was also interviewed about their training and contest experience. Finally, Marte gave some parting words.

Awards

The Rookie of the Year awards are given to the highest-scoring first-time finalists. Runner-ups Raphael Tabingo and Kei Hang Derek Chan each won a mouse, and Rookie of the Year Jerome Austin Te won a keyboard.

Honorable mentions were Mohammad Nur Casib, Adrian Guanson Soriaga, Lucas Miguel Agcaoili, Alvann Walter Paredes Dy, Tristan Gabriel Cabinta, Jeremy Aidan Yu, Alan Vender, Val Derrick James Alamillo, Alexandra Brianne Gochian, and Davis Nicholo Magpantay.

Bronze medalists, in decreasing order of rank, were Jose Mari Paolo Rollan, Hans Gabriel De Vera, Raphael Tabingo, Kei Hang Derek Chan, Cassidy Kyler Tan, and Jerome Austin Te. They each won Php 2000.

The fourth, third, and second place winners, Filbert Ephraim Wu, Kian Colin Chua, and John Lloyd Allas, each won a silver medal and Php 3000.

Raphael Dylan Dalida, the top-ranked contestant, won a gold medal and Php 6000.

Congratulations to all the winners of the National Olympiad in Informatics Philippines 2023!

The organizing committee would like to thank the DOST-SEI for their continued support for NOI.PH. We would also like to thank the Ateneo de Manila University for hosting us, and our student volunteers for helping out.

2023 National Eliminations

The NOI.PH 2023 National Eliminations started on 6:00 PM of 10 February 2023 and finished on 11:59 PM of 19 February 2023. It consisted of thirteen problems of varying difficulty.

The Participants

Among the 356 registrants, 277 participated in the 222-hour online competition. The participants came from 46 different schools from all over the country. Moreover, each of the main island groups of the Philippines were represented.

Abakoda 2022 Results

From October 14, 2022, to January 2, 2023, we held the 2nd Abakoda, which is a series of contests designed to introduce the basics of informatics Olympiad-style competitions to Filipino students. Between October 14 and November 11, there was a long tutorial contest for participants who needed to learn or brush up on their basic programming skills. On the Saturdays between November 12 and December 17, we held short contests on Codeforces. Then, from December 24 to January 2, we held a long contest in the same format as the NOI.PH Elimination Round.

This year, we implemented a referral system, where the top 10 referrers receive 50 pesos for each person they referred who got a positive score in any of the rounds. What is Abakoda?

Abakoda 2022 is a series of online programming contests targeted at those who have little to no experience in programming.

Is it only for high school students?

Even if you’re not participating, you can help promote this contest and win cash prizes in our referral program (see below for details).

What if I’ve never joined a programming contest before?

We have a tutorial! We have released a tutorial video to make sure you know how to play the game.

I’m not good at programming or do not know any programming at all. Can I still join?

Am I forced to use a specific programming language?

How much does it cost to join?

It’s free, Bruce Lee! Participation in these contests is FREE and open to anyone interested in computer science and programming.

When will the contests be held?

From October 14, 2022, 6:00 P.M. to November 11, 11:59 P.M., there will be one long warm-up contest. For this long contest, you do not need to stay online and in the contest for the entire duration — just drop by and submit code any time during the contest window.

Then, every Saturday from November 12, 2022, to December 17, 2022, from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M., there will be short contest rounds. You are encouraged to stay online through each two-hour round.

Finally, from December 24, 2022, 2:00 P.M. to January 2, 2023, 8:00 P.M., there will be another long contest. Again, for this long contest, you do not need to stay online and in the contest for the entire duration — just drop by and submit code any time during the contest window. This contest has precisely the same format as the NOI.PH Elimination Round, but easier.

I missed the first few contests. Can I still join?

Yes. You can even join the previous contests. Of course, you will no longer be in the official rankings of the contests you missed but at least you can expose yourself to past problems.

Will I be disqualified if I miss some contests?

If you miss the contests, you will be unable to (1) ask questions during the contest (2) join the discussion on Discord right after each round, when it is expected that most people will be actively discussing the round (3) be recognized on the Facebook page based on how well you did. But that doesn’t disqualify you from joining future contests.

We get that sometimes life gets in the way and you need to sit out a few contests. You can still ask questions after the contest and read the solution explanations.

Is it just a series of contests?

No way, Jose!

Will there be a discussion of the solutions?

High school students may even ask for help on the Discord server for the first out of the four problems even while the contest round is still running.

Are there prizes?

There will be prizes for the long contest. The top 5 eligible scorers will win limited edition NOI.PH Abakoda laptop stickers.

Note: Only high school students are eligible to win prizes. Past Abakoda prize winners, NOI.PH medalists, and NOI.PH Rookie-of-the-Year awardees are ineligible to win prizes.

There will be no prizes for the warm-up contest and the short contests.

Scroll down a bit to find the “Member Management” panel on the right side of the page. Then, click on the “Join” button.
Contest rounds will keep appearing on this page as the series goes on. Simply click on the “Register” link below the name of a specific round to register for it, and “Enter” to go into its contest page.

Exclusive Bonus for Filipino students!

If you are a Filipino high school student, you can join the NOI.PH Discord server by emailing [email protected] with your name, grade level, and school. There, you can ask for help when you don’t understand something, or you can also just make friends with high school students all over the country, who just like you are learning and practicing programming.

Fill up the form here to get a referral URL that you can share to potential participants. This URL will contain a referral code that will be attached to the registration of those you referred (a person can only register once). If this referred participant gets at least 1 correct answer in any one of the rounds, you accumulate 1 point (you only get at most 1 point for each person you refer).

At the end of the series, we’ll collect the top 10 referrers who accumulated the most points and send them 50 pesos for each point (up to 1500 pesos max for each referrer). In addition, the referrer who get the most points will win an additional 5000 pesos.

We are happy to present the Philippine team to this year’s International Olympiad in Informatics hosted by Yogyakarta, Indonesia. They will represent the country in the world’s most prestigious computing competition for high school students.

Raphael Dylan Dalida

Grade 11, Philippine Science High School Main Campus

Dylan has been interested in competitive programming since eighth grade. After joining the NOI, his drive for competitive programming skyrocketed, and he has joined the NOI every year since. Programming enabled him to be more focused and to relieve stress during the pandemic. Programming isn’t his only stress reliever, though! He also spends time playing the piano.

Ivan is someone who was always interested in programming. His father taught him basic programming during grade 5 and Ivan fell in love with it. From the first script he created on his iPad mini to his studying of different algorithms and data structures, he knew that computer science would be his future. He likes playing frisbee and video games with friends — but uses discs only in the former!

Filbert Ephraim Wu

Grade 10, Victory Christian International School

Ephraim first discovered computer programming from his brother back in 2017, when his kuya showed him a program that “did some magic with arrays”. Ephraim likes speed — in both programming and cubing. He once solved a 3×3 Rubik’s cube in under ten seconds! On top of all these, he also enjoys cityscape photography and has been taking pictures of the Manila skyline every day.
